“If you want people to take the train, make it safe, clean it, make it beautiful, make it amazing,” Dafi said during a press conference in Morris County, New Jersey. “She can cure it in hours – not day, not a week, no months – hours. And she chooses,” Dafi said.
Dafi made this comment a few days after the Metropolitan Transportation Authority CEO and chairman Janno Lieber planned to improve crime, rent theft, and agency’s security, a few days after a letter was sent. The MTA has to respond by 31 March, with a warning that failure to do so can give rise to the return of federal funds.
The MTA depends a lot on federal support – as $ 2.5 billion per year – to provide projects including subway and rail car upgradation and system access. Broadly $ 14 billion, or 20%of its upcoming multi-year capital scheme, is expected to come from Washington.
A MTA spokesman said that the agency welcomes the opportunity to discuss its safety and rent enforcement efforts. The agency has reported a significant decline in transit crime since 2020 and says that the fare theft has come down since last summer.
Hosul has increased the number of National Guard soldiers patrolling the metro and has instructed NYPD to keep two officers in every night train. His office has implicated deployment as part of an aggressive reaction to high-profile events, which have shaken public confidence in the system.
Dafi’s comments also came amid a separate controversy between congestion pricing between the Trump administration and New York officials, which are planned to raise $ 15 billion for improving infrastructure by charging drivers entering Manhattan’s Central Trade District. The White House has tried to block the initiative, and the MTA is suit to allow it to continue.
