Total lunar eclipse: At the end of this week, get ready for a breathtaking astronomical spectacle, as a total lunar eclipse, known as Chandra Grahan or Blood Moon, will transmit the night sky on 7-8 September.
During this rare event, the Earth will go straight between the Sun and the Moon, put its shadow on the lunar surface. This will give the moon a stunning deep red-orange shine, leading to a dramatic visual treatment for skywachrs.
The eclipse will be fully visible in Asia, including all parts of the whole of India, as well as Western Australia. Parts of Europe, Africa, Eastern Australia and New Zealand will also look at the partial stages of the event.
Why is it called blood moon?
The striking red color is caused by an event known as the shatter of the sand. As the sunlight passes through the Earth’s atmosphere, less blue wavelengths are scattered, while red waves bends and reach the moon. This natural filter takes a bath to the lunar surface in a crimson glow, popularly called blood moon effect.
Where to see in India
This will be one of the most widely visible lunar eclipses in recent years, and about 85% of the world’s population will get to see its share at least, provided that the sky is clear.

The phase of totality, when the Moon is completely immersed in the shade of the Earth, will last for 82 minutes, making it one of the most magnificent lunar eclipses of the decade.
How to see the eclipse and get photographed
The best part? No protective gear is required. Unlike a solar eclipse, you can see a lunar eclipse with safely naked eyes.
To see closely:
- The telescope or a telescope will reveal stunning details such as lunar crater and color shield.
- Use apps such as stallurium or skysfari to track the position of the moon.
- To capture it on camera, use a DSLR or smartphone on a tripod with long exposure (1-2 seconds), ISO 400-800, and manual focus.
For tip: Try time-omission photography to document the change of the moon throughout the night.
