New Delhi. Traffic lights are used all over the world to regulate traffic on the roads. If there were no traffic lights, the congested roads would be in bad shape and the traffic in the entire city would become disorganized. Challans worth thousands of rupees are often issued for jumping traffic signals. If there was no traffic signal, the challan would also have been issued. But have you ever wondered where these traffic signals came from and who created them first?
As the network of roads increased with time, the number of vehicles on them also increased. Due to the huge number of vehicles, a traffic jam started forming. In such a situation, there was a lack of a traffic system to run the vehicles smoothly. This need to organize vehicles on the roads gave rise to traffic signals, the purpose of which was to reduce traffic on the road by stopping vehicles moving at main intersections at certain intervals.
Where was the first traffic light?
The idea of traffic light came from London in 1868. At that time, horses, buggies and aces used to travel in London. The roads were full of them. In such a situation, pedestrians started facing a lot of problems on the road. The most difficult situation was at Parliament Square, a crowded area. The crowd was so huge that even the police could not manage the traffic. To deal with this problem, the idea of installing traffic signals came.
However, the first traffic light was installed at a railway crossing in London in 1868. This light ran on gas and had only two colors, red and green. The message to stop was given by red light and to go by green light. The police personnel used to operate this traffic light manually. Gradually traffic lights were introduced in other countries of Europe and America also.
first electric traffic light
In 1912, the first electric traffic light was installed in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. Policeman Lester Wyer created the first electric traffic light. This signal included red and green lights. Then in the year 1920, yellow light was added to the traffic light for the first time. Since then the traffic signals have three colored lights.
