Corn flour can be a healthy option in controlling bad cholesterol levels in the body – a recent study has demonstrated dramatic results.
A surprising baking ingredient has recently demonstrated great potential in controlling bad cholesterol levels in the body. A recent study conducted by scientists at Arizona State University states that corn flour is one of the secret ingredients that can help manage bad cholesterol levels. For people struggling with high cholesterol levels – corn flour could be a game-changer.
The study was conducted with three different types of corn flour – whole grain corn flour, refined corn flour, and a unique blend of refined corn flour with corn bran. Study participants were selected based on their high cholesterol levels. Participants then consumed these flours incorporated into pita breads and muffins for a period of four weeks.

What did the results show?
The results showed a dramatic reduction in LDL levels in the body. LDL cholesterol – often called bad cholesterol – decreased by about 5 percent in participants. In some participants, LDL levels decreased by as much as 13 percent. While whole grains and refined corn meal showed little effect on cholesterol levels, a mixture of refined corn meal and corn bran was clearly a game-changer.
The findings of this study offer a simple and healthy approach to boost heart health through minor dietary changes. Usually, cholesterol-lowering strategies involve strict dietary patterns – however, according to this study, all we need to do is replace regular flour with corn-based alternatives for a healthier body.

Why is corn flour mix so healthy?
Corn bran is rich in insoluble fiber which helps improve digestive health, and also plays an important role in cholesterol management. A mixture of corn flour and corn bran can be a great tasting alternative to a whole grain diet, and also helps improve heart health.
This research provides a healthy option to consumers who can switch to a simpler diet with a corn-based alternative instead of regular flour. The promising results shown by the research can help reduce LDL cholesterol levels in the body without strict dietary changes.
