Restrictions on Apple iPhone 16: Indonesia has banned the sale or operation of Apple’s iPhone 16 in the country. Indonesia’s Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita announced that any iPhone 16 sold in Indonesia is illegal. He also warned customers against buying iPhone 16 abroad.
Kartasasmita said that if someone runs an iPhone 16 in Indonesia, it means that the device is illegal. Please inform us about this. Kartasasmita said he emphasized that no International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) certification has been issued for the iPhone 16 in Indonesia.
Why ban on iPhone 16
This ban has been imposed due to Apple’s unfulfilled promise of investment in Indonesia. It was reported that tech giant Apple has invested 1.48 trillion rupiah ($95 million) out of 1.71 trillion rupiah as promised, leaving a shortfall of 230 billion rupiah ($14.75 million). Kartasasmita told in his office that the Ministry of Industry has not yet been able to issue a permit for the iPhone 16, as there are still some commitments that Apple has to fulfill. Earlier this month, the minister had announced that Apple’s iPhone 16 cannot be sold in Indonesia right now. Because TKDN certification has still not been granted, further investment from Apple is awaited.

The TKDN Certificate requires companies to meet the 40 percent local content requirement to sell their products in Indonesia. This certificate is directly linked to Apple’s plan to set up research and development facilities known as Apple Academy in the country. This announcement has been made despite Apple CEO Tim Cook’s visit to Jakarta in April. Where he discussed possible manufacturing plans with President Joko Widodo. Cook had indicated that the company would consider the possibility of setting up manufacturing facilities in Indonesia.
