Ramkumar Nayak, Raipur:- The name of Bastar of Chhattisgarh remains a topic of discussion in the entire country. When the name of Chhattisgarh is mentioned, the first thing that comes to mind is Bastar. In fact, the folk art culture and unique tradition of Bastar still persists. Now, after a tough competition among 28 states of the country, Chhattisgarh’s tableau Bastar’s ‘Adim Jan Sansad – Muria Darbar’ has been selected for the Republic Day Parade to be held in New Delhi this year. 16 out of 28 states have been selected for the parade to be held on the duty path in New Delhi. The unique theme and design of the tableau managed to impress the expert committee of the Defense Ministry.
Let us tell you that the tableau of Chhattisgarh is based on the theme of the Government of India ‘India is the mother of democracy’. This tableau reflects the democratic consciousness and traditions present in the tribal society since ancient times, which are still alive and prevalent in the Bastar division of the state even after 75 years of independence. In this tableau, under the central theme ‘Primitive People’s Parliament’, the ‘Muria Darbar’ of Jagdalpur and its source Limau-Raja have been depicted. Muria Darbar is a world-famous Bastar Dussehra tradition that has been going on for 600 years. The Muria Darbar, which has been following democratic traditions since the princely state, is also called the Parliament of Bastar.
Why were decisions taken with lemons
According to the information received from the Public Relations Department of Chhattisgarh, the origin of this tradition is found at a place called Limau-Raja of Bade-Dongar in Kondagaon district. According to the folk tale related to this place, in the primitive times, when there was no king, the primitive society used to consider a lemon as the symbol of the king and take decisions among themselves. The theme and design of the tableau was prepared after extensive research at the local level and under the guidance of senior officials. The tableau based on this theme has received final approval after a difficult process of five stages. After selecting the theme and design, the 3D model of the tableau was presented before the expert committee of the Defense Ministry. At last the tableau got the final approval along with the music selection. The theme and design of the tableau attracted the selectors a lot.
This is how tableaux are selected
The Defense Ministry seeks proposals from all the states, union territories, central ministries and departments for the tableaux to be included in the parade. These proposals are evaluated. Several meetings are held at different stages with the expert committee for the selection of tableaux. The committee includes many eminent persons and choreographers associated with the fields of art, culture, painting, sculpture, music, architecture. The expert committee examines the proposals on the basis of theme. The concept, design and its visual impact are considered by the committee before making a recommendation.
