Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday held civil engineers, advisors, concessions, and poor detailed project reports (DPRS) responsible for the increasing number of road accidents and deadly numbers in the country.

“Most accidents in the country occur due to small citizen mistakes and no one is held accountable. Even small things such as road signal and marking systems are very bad in the country; These can be copied from countries such as Spain, Austria and Swizarland, ”Gadkari said in his address at the two -day Global Road Infratech Summit and Expo (GRIS).

Gadkari highlighted the immediate need for better road safety measures and asked the road construction industry to develop strategies to increase road safety by adopting new technologies and durable and recycled construction materials.

“India suffered 480,000 road accidents, 180,000 deaths and about 400,000 serious injuries (in 2023). Out of these 140,000 accidents, the deaths occur at the age of 18-45, most of which are two-wheelers and pedestrians. Gadkari said that these accidents contribute to the economic loss of 3% of GDP.

He pointed to the poor quality of the DPR, causing the engineers to increase road accidents due to poor planning and design. “It gives me a feeling that, originally, engineers are responsible for road accidents. Therefore, the main problem is road engineering and faulty plan, and faulty DPRS, ”he said.

With a highest priority with road safety, the government aims to reduce the accident rate by 50% by 2030, he said.

Gadkari urged the industry and the government to cooperate on solutions to prevent road accidents, emphasize the importance of education in the construction of safe infrastructure and promote safe driving habits.

He also highlighted the need for strong law enforcement and responsible emergency medical services.

“The Summit with the Theme ‘Vision Zero: Sustainable Infratech and Proper Roads’ represents a holistic approach to road safety, combines the latest technological progress with the latest practices to make safe roads for all. By giving priority to security in every aspect of road design, construction and management, this subject wants to move towards such a future where there is a future, this subject wants Are, finally aims to zero deadly people, ”KK Kapila, President Emeritus, International Road Federation (IRF), a global road safety bodies are working for better and safe roads worldwide.

Kapila said, “The impressive road safety effect of this summit will be shared, including its implementation success and its life -saving ability as a template, which a country can adopt to achieve safe roads and dynamics for a permanent future for all.”

Some subjects discussed at the summit will include strengthening the governing framework for safe infrastructure, integrating road safety in urban planning, traffic optimization with intelligent infrastructure and taking advantage of intelligent transport system technologies to increase public transport and road safety.
