first reviews
Fandango’s Eric Davis wrote, “Alex Garland’s #CivilWar is unlike anything I’ve seen. This is a big, sticky, action-packed war picture from A24, which means it brings with it a richness and depth that you don’t get anywhere else. Garland’s best work – impeccable cinematography and entertaining from start to finish.”
Sean O’Connell of CinemaBlend wrote, “Alex Garland’s Civil War is a remarkable, astonishing, sublime achievement that brilliantly chooses war journalists as its entry point. The power and necessity of those who record society’s actions. A fascinating study of the front lines. A great achievement!”
‘A true knockout’
“Umm…Alex Garland’s Civil War is incredible. A true knockout. Any movies I wanted to compare it to would force the over-hyped situation, so I’ll leave it at that. One of the most entertaining films I have seen in the last few years. Oh my god,” another audience member shared. “Alex Garland’s Civil War: I’m Speechless. A horrifying story. A journalistic story. An American story, well told,” felt another.
One reviewer also wrote, “Alex Garland’s Civil War is an absolute no-nonsense masterpiece. A riveting, unflinching, deeply cautionary tale that is deeply scary. Watching it, one can’t help but feel that we are actually How close they are to happening, making it necessary to stop it before it actually happens. #SXSW”
Perry Nemiroff of Collider also gave a positive review and said, “#CivilWar is phenomenal. Alex Garland’s latest is a thoroughly entertaining war film. An epic yet deeply intimate piece that uses the experiences and inspirations of a group of military-embedded journalists to expose the extremely scary reality of living in a world that never learns. The production value is through the roof. Between Rob Hardy’s intensely intense cinematography and sharp sound design, Civil War puts the audience in the position of a war photographer as closely as possible.
He also praised the cast’s performances and said, “Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura and Stephen McKinley Henderson make for an A+ lead ensemble. And the dynamic between Dunst and Spenny’s characters is especially poignant. A brilliant microcosm of generational inspiration, and the challenge of figuring out how to forge a path forward, not a path that goes around in circles. #SXSW
Civil War will be released in theaters next month on 12th April.
