Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor is going to watch the India-Pakistan cricket match when Narendra Modi takes oath for a record third term. The newly elected MP told reporters that he has not been invited to the swearing-in ceremony on Sunday. Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi will take oath at 7:15 pm.
“I have not been invited to the swearing-in ceremony, so I will watch the (India vs Pakistan) match,” he told ANI after the Congress Parliamentary Party meeting on Saturday.
The World Cup T20 match will be played between India and Pakistan in the USA on June 9. This much-awaited match will be played at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
The Men in Blue will be coming into this match after defeating Ireland by 8 wickets. Meanwhile, Babar Azam-led Pakistan suffered a disappointing defeat in the Super Over against the USA in their previous match.
Leaders of seven neighbouring countries, including the Maldives, will attend the swearing-in ceremony on Sunday evening, which the Thiruvananthapuram MP described as a “good tradition”.
Tharoor remarked, “India has invited all its neighbouring countries except Pakistan, which is a signal. It is a good tradition that started with the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Modi. But this time there is one less. They have not invited Pakistan. So then, that is also a signal.”
“It’s good that the Maldives is at least making an effort to come here and speak. They have not been particularly friendly or receptive to our interests of late. This is the first time the President is coming here. I assume this visit will be used for some meetings as well,” he said.
