In the solitary tribal area of Banskantha, 29 families who have tolerated social boycott for more than a decade have finally returned to their homes. For 12 years, there was no resolution until the IPS was stepped into the probationary officer Suman Nala.
As a young probationary officer, Nala ended the 12 -year social boycott of 29 families from Banskantha, earning recognition for his efforts. Come from a minor background, he earned a computer science engineering degree from Bits Pilani in 2012 and worked in Oracle for three years, but he was to join the Civil Services.
Settled, he quit his job and in 2019, in his fourth attempt, secured 508th rank in UPSC Civil Services Examination, which was being selected for the post of IPS. Initially appointed to the Jharkhand cadre in 2021, he was transferred to Gujarat cadre due to marriage to Gujarat cadre Ips Om Prakash Jat. Since then, she has been serving in Gujarat.
Nala’s visit was challenging. The UPSC curriculum and its engineering background faced difficulties, as computer science was not an alternative subject. He first approved Prelims in 2016, but did not pass Mains. In 2017, she reached the interview stage but did not make a final list. She failed again in 2018, but with the support of her husband (who also approved UPSC) and her parents, she was successful in 2019.
Suman Nala’s strategy was effective. For prelims, he studied mock tests and monthly current affairs, assuming that the tests indicate what to remember and what to ignore. For his alternative subject, he chose history, which he enjoyed. She was ready for prelims and mens together, focusing on prelims three to four months ago, then mainly modified the men’s. Creating notes was a habit that helped the amendment. In the interview, he focused on his state, district, career and education.
A 2021 batch IPS officer, he was posted as ASP in Danta. There, his domestic help informed him that his parents were among the 300 people of the Kodarvi community for 12 years under the ‘Chadotara’ tradition after the 2014 murder. Nala investigated the case and found that the main accused was acquitted, yet the punishment remained. He started a discussion with the Panchs with SP Akshayraj Makwana and Sub-Inspector Jayashree Desai. Through the patient talks and through increasing Rs 70 lakh (Rs 40 lakh from Collector Fund and Rs 30 lakh from NGO), it managed to bring back the families. Now the fields are flourishing, 30 houses are being built, and the children are going to school.
