Foreign Minister Jaishankar described ASEAN as the basis of India’s Act East policy and Indo-Pacific vision
In the opening session of the ASEAN-India Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is the cornerstone of India’s Act East policy and its Indo-Pacific vision. In his speech, he also said that the existing political, economic and security cooperation with ASEAN is India’s top priority. Jaishankar is currently in the capital of Laos to attend ASEAN meetings. NEET-UG paper recovered from Hazaribagh school, shared with money-lenders: CBI
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in an official statement said that the trunks containing the NEET UG 2024 question papers were brought to Oasis School in Hazaribagh on the morning of May 5. Within minutes of the trunks’ arrival, the Hazaribagh NTA City Coordinator cum Principal and Centre Superintendent cum Vice Principal gave unauthorised and illegal access to Pankaj Kumar alias Aditya alias Sahil, who is one of the masterminds of the case. He used sophisticated tools to unlock the trunk and access the NEET question papers. The agency also said that a group of solvers in Hazaribagh solved the stolen question paper on the same day and shared it with students, who paid money to the accused.
Rashtrapati Bhavan’s Darbar and Ashoka Hall renamed
President Draupadi Murmu has renamed two major halls of Rashtrapati Bhavan – ‘Darbar Hall’ and ‘Ashok Hall’ – as ‘Ganatantra Mandap’ and ‘Ashoka Mandap’ respectively. According to a press release from the President’s Secretariat, the decision was taken to make the atmosphere of the grand structure reflect Indian cultural values and ethos. It said renaming of ‘Ashoka Hall’ to ‘Ashoka Mandap’ will bring uniformity in language and remove traces of anglicisation, while preserving the original qualities associated with the word Ashoka. Union Budget 2024 focuses on rehabilitation of migrants and returnees
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the Union Budget 2024-25 focuses on supporting displaced communities through rehabilitation and relief efforts for migrants and repatriates. She also gave Rs 2,19,643.31 to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The budget for relief and rehabilitation for migrants and repatriates has been set at Rs 539.72 crore. This increased amount will support several key initiatives, such as managing refugee settlements in Tibet and the then West and East Pakistan, rehabilitating Sri Lankan refugees and providing assistance to the northeastern states. In addition, the government has reformed the Indian legal system by enacting three new laws: the Indian Civil Protection Code, 2023, the Indian Judicial Code, 2023 and the Indian Evidence Act, 2023.
Vande Bharat Sleeper, Vande Metro enter testing phase
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the much-awaited Vande Bharat sleeper trains and Vande Metro have entered the testing phase, adding that 50 more Amrut Bharat trains have been approved. The Amrut Bharat train is an LHB push-pull train with non-air-conditioned coaches. It offers better facilities for rail passengers, including better seats, better luggage racks, mobile charging points with suitable mobile holders, LED lights, CCTVs and better public information systems. All these trains have new designs, which provide better service and comfort to passengers.
