Anxiety is often characterized by a feeling of dread and restlessness about daily activities. Sweating, rapid heartbeat and restlessness are some of the symptoms of anxiety. It has been observed that college students often fall prey to anxiety disorders – with substance abuse and obesity contributing to the triggers.
However, it has been observed that with healthy physical activity, along with diet and lifestyle choices that can add positivity to the body and mind, anxiety disorders can be managed. The study was led by Dezhuo Sun, Jiangfei Zhu and Zhonghan Bao, Silpakorn University, Nakhon Pathom, Thailand.

How was the study conducted?
The study was conducted on 498 college students (236 males and 262 females) between the ages of 18 and 20. Students were selected from three universities in Fujian, China. The questionnaire included questions related to their physical exercise, their dietary choices, their lifestyle habits and how often they felt symptoms of anxiety, nervousness and anxiousness.

Further to the survey, it was observed that dietary nutrition and lifestyle habits play an important role in improving the effect of physical activity on anxiety. It was observed that physical activity showed a 36.93% reduction in anxiety levels, while healthy dietary choices and lifestyle habits showed 24.9% of the total effect.

How can a healthy diet and good sleep reduce anxiety?
The study further states that when we consume a healthy diet rich in essential nutrients for the body, it helps in the synthesis and regulation of neurotransmitters – mainly serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters help improve mood and deal with symptoms of anxiety.
The study further revealed the role good quality sleep plays in reducing anxiety symptoms. A good night’s sleep can correct the body’s circadian rhythm and enhance the body’s immunity and coping abilities. This may help reduce anxiety and stress.
