On a lazy day, scrolling the social media post carefully on my phone, I stumbled on a post, which rethinked me again what I was doing. It was a post of Indian actor Kunal Kapoor. He reminded me the importance of reading more and scrolling less in the world of digital extra. He insisted on spending more time with offline people than online. What is digital fasting?

Digital fasting refers to conscious and periodic brakes using digital screen – phone, computer, tablet and TV – to relax the eyes and reduce mental fatigue.

What is the ideal screen time in a day?

“The screen time of about 8–10 hours is common, but it should be unbalanced with good practices such as ’20 -20-20-20 rules’, appropriate lighting and hydration,” Dr. God says.

Otherwise, prolonged screen use has both short -term and long -term side effects.

Long -term screen use includes short -term side effects:

* eye strain

* Dry eyes (low blinking)

* Blurred or ups and downs

Long -term effects may include:

* Constant dry eye syndrome

* Mayopia’s progress (proximity), especially in children

* Visual fatigue affecting productivity and concentration

* Possible disintegration of circadian rhythm due to risk of blue light, affecting sleep and overall health

Benefits of digital fasting

Taking regular brakes from the screen can significantly reduce the symptoms of digital eye stress.

Says experts, “Regular brakes allow the eye muscles to relax, tear the film to fill the film and remove visual fatigue. Even less, a 1-2 minute break can create a significant difference every 20-30 minutes,” the expert says.

You can see improvement within 24 to 72 hours of low screen time, especially in symptoms such as dryness, eye fatigue and headache. For older cases, especially with dry eye syndrome, one can take a few weeks of continuous digital fasting and accessory care (eg lubricant drops) to see full resolution.

When it comes to digital eye strain, your screen time also matters before the bed. The doctor suggests that the minimum 1 hour screen-free time before the bed is ideal, and 2 hours even better!

“It allows melatonin to normalize production, improve sleep quality. From an eye health angle, it reduces light contact with screen, which disrupts the circadian rhythm and keeps the eyes in a constant position of vigilance, delays rest,” Dr. Prabu says.
