Lizzie McGuire, you are an outfit repeater! This quote from The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003) was an attempt to embarrass Hilary Duff’s character. And, generally, actors don’t want to be seen repeating clothes, but times are changing. Recently, actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu traded her white wedding gown for a black cocktail dress. On the same lines, actor Shriya Saran is also a proud outfit repeater.
Saran has been “doing this for a long time” and has no qualms about appearing in the same outfit. “It’s a big thing for me now to wear my clothes again,” says the 41-year-old. I think this is part of our Indian culture. In my family, you wear your wedding saree every year on Karva Chauth and do not buy new clothes. A mother gives her sarees and jewelery to her daughter.” Recently at an Eid party, she was seen in the same saree which she wore on Diwali last year. Giving a new life to her wedding saree, the actor wore it for a puja in January. She also repeated a saree for actor Aamir Khan’s daughter’s wedding reception.
As a public figure, Saran admits there is “constant pressure” to always have new clothes for events, as the industry thrives on vanity. Calling it “annoying”, she adds, “I love wearing gowns, but I love wearing shorts or sarees; it’s my style. “But there is pressure to look relevant, fresh and happening all the time.”
The Drishyam 2 (2022) actor believes in slow fashion. “It is hard work and can take several months to make a single hand-woven saree. Sustainable fashion means being mindful of where your clothes come from. Sustainability has always been present in our culture, but it has been lost somewhere. And we’ve started buying fast fashion. Now, whatever I buy, I try to make sure I’m responsible,” she ends.
