New Delhi. The Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) has accused Netflix of not providing sufficient information about how the company used its customers’ personal data between 2018 and 2020. Therefore, the authority has imposed a fine of €4.75 million i.e. about Rs 42.35 crore on Netflix.
This fine has been imposed after an investigation that started in the year 2019. The investigation revealed that the streaming giant did not meet the requirements of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The investigation found the following:
DPA, which was investigating this matter, found that there is a lack of clarity in the privacy policy of Netflix. Especially the company did not give any clarity about how it handles its customer data. The company had no clear answer as to how it ensures the confidentiality of customers’ personal data. Additionally, when customers inquired about the specifics of the data from Netflix, they were also not given sufficient details. This lack of transparency violates the GDPR. GDPR is a regulation that requires businesses to disclose how they handle personal information and ensure that customers receive appropriate responses when they request data information.

The Dutch regulator said that the investigation found shortcomings in Netflix’s data protection rules during the years 2018 and 2020 and the fine imposed on it was due to its failure to comply with European Union privacy laws during the same period.
