India’s vehicle scraping policy (V-VMP) is designed to remove old and unsafe vehicles. But till now progress has been slow. By August 2025, only 3 lakh vehicles have been scraped, out of which 1.41 lakh were government. At present, on an average, only 16,830 vehicles are going to junk every month. The private sector has invested Rs 2,700 crore to build this ecosystem. Gadkari has appealed to the auto companies to give at least 5 percent discount on the new car to the customers who bring scrapage certificates, so that people should join the scheme fast.
Gadkari says that if the scraping policy is followed properly, the cost of auto components can decrease by 25 percent. Because steel, aluminum and other metals coming out of the scrap will return to the supply chain again. Also, removal of old trains will reduce pollution, reduce fuel consumption and strengthen road safety standards. Gadkari said that India spends Rs 22 lakh crore every year on petrol and diesel imports, which is not durable for a long time.
Future Roadmap: Ethanol and Energy Security
India’s current auto sector is worth Rs 22 lakh crore, while China is at 47 lakh crores and America is at 78 lakh crore level. Gadkari expressed confidence that India will soon leave them behind. For this, the government is emphasizing on ethanol production and blending. Currently, the country is moving from E20 towards E27 mixture. He said that Brazil has been running on 27% ethanol blended petrol for 49 years, India can also do so. Gadkari also linked road safety with national security and said that pollution control, fuel self -sufficiency and safe traffic will strengthen India.
