Kibbutz Berry. Jillian and Pete Brisley are trying to put their shattered lives back together. He is busy beautifying his house in which his daughter and granddaughters were murdered by Hamas on October 7. They are cleaning the house in the hope that their son-in-law, who was taken hostage in Gaza, may someday return home.
The glass broken when the extremists entered the house has been cleaned. The clothes of those killed are being packed. Jillian Brisley’s daughter Liane (48) and two grandchildren Noia (16) and Yahel (13) were killed in Kibbutz Berry during the Hamas attack.
Jillian says, “We really don’t want him (son-in-law) to come back and see the situation that she (Lianne) was in. We can only hope and pray that he is in Gaza. And come back some time.”
Dozens of families whose relatives have been taken hostage to Gaza are facing a nightmare. Nearly five months into the Israel-Hamas war, they are still hopeful that the remaining hostages will be released, but their frustration with a solution is growing. After several rounds of talks began, they are worried that both Israel and the world are not taking interest in their struggle.
Ofri Bibas Levy’s nephews Ariel, four, and Kfir, one, were taken hostage along with their parents. “We are worried all the time,” Levy said. “We have been struggling with this dilemma for four months and do not know what is going to happen.”
According to Israeli officials, in October Hamas extremists attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people, mostly civilians. Apart from this, they kidnapped about 250 people including women, children and old people.
The attack, the deadliest in Israel’s history, sparked a war in Gaza that has killed more than 29,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to health officials.
More than 100 hostages, mostly women, children and foreign nationals, were released under an agreement in late November. While Israel released 240 Palestinians in return, negotiations for the release of the remaining hostages have stalled. Israel believes that at least 30 of the 134 remaining hostages were killed on October 7 or died in captivity.
