The US administration has recently revised the H -1B visa selection process for foreigners working in the US. The move aims to ensure fairness, transparency and efficiency in the recruitment of foreign talent in the US. Following the new rules, there has been a significant decrease in the number of registration. Compared to last year, registration has decreased by 38 percent, Times of India has been reported.
Earlier, employers were allowed to submit several registrations to the single beneficiary, which increased their chances of selection. However, under the new H -1B process, each beneficiary can register only once, no matter how many employers present on their behalf.
The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has informed that the move aims to eliminate several applications for the same candidate. “The new process ensures a fair and more transparent selection, reduces the ability to manipulate the system,” USCIS said, the report states.

Out of the 479,953 registrations received this year, 470,342 have been considered eligible. However, there has been a huge decrease in the number of registration since 2024, when 758,994 registrations were registered. The average number of registration per beneficiary has declined from 1.70 in FY 2024 to 1.06 in FY 2025 in FY 2025. About 442,000 unique beneficiaries were registered in FY 2025, while in FY 2024, 446,000 were registered.
Indians forms the largest group of H -1B visa holders. Of the 386,000 H -1B visas given in 2023, 72.3 percent of Indians were honored. To register, applicants will have to pay $ 10 to the USCIS. The duration of this visa is initially three years but can be extended to six years.
All dropbox submissions are processed through the US consulate in Chennai, although applicants can leave their documents at visa application centers across India. However, securing these slots has proved to be a challenge. The new process aims to streamline the renovation process for thousands of H -1B visas applicants, which reduces the burden of obtaining the appointment slot in the consulates.
