Moscow. The war between Russia and Ukraine has now taken a dangerous turn. Instead of ground combat, long range missiles are now being used. While Ukraine has started attacking Russia with America’s ATACMS missiles, Russia has also shown to what extent it can go by firing Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) on Kiev.
Meanwhile, Moscow said on Thursday that it has included the new American ballistic missile defense base located in northern Poland in its priority list of targets. This air defense base, located in the city of Radzikovo near the Baltic coast, is a missile shield of the NATO border, which was officially opened on 13 November.
“The so-called US missile defense base in Poland (not in reality) has been placed on the priority list of potential targets,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “The nature and level of threats posed by these Western military facilities are well known and have been taken into account.” Despite NATO insisting that the Radzikovo facility and a similar system in Romania are completely defensive, Moscow has repeatedly described it as a threat.
‘The purpose of defense base is defense, not attack’
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on November 20 that the base “significantly enhances our defense against the growing ballistic missile threat from outside the Euro-Atlantic area.” On the other hand, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the new base “symbolizes the progress of the US military infrastructure in Europe towards our borders.”
How did Poland respond?
On the other hand, Poland’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Paweł Wronski said on Thursday that there are no nuclear missiles at that base and it is “only for defense”. He said, “This is a base which serves the purpose of defense, not for attack. “Such threats will certainly lead to strengthening of Poland’s and NATO’s air defenses, and should also be taken into account by the US.”
