US Visa Rules Trump Indian Students F Visa Crack: Plan to study in America? Students in India should pay attention that the Trump administration has proposed new rules for international students, cultural exchange visitors and media members to tighten the visa period, Roots Informed on Wednesday.
According to the proposed regulation, J Visa for students for Fia Visa and cultural exchange programs will be capted in four years, replacing the current system where they are valid for the entire duration of study or employment in the US.
The draft also tries to curb the i visa for foreign journalists, which can currently last up to 240 days and in the case of Chinese and Hong Kong passport holders, only 90 days. However, the proposal says that visa holders can apply for extension.
The administration said that the move was aimed at better “monitoring and maintaining” of visa holders during his stay. US President Donald Trump has already pushed through a widespread crack on legal immigration since assuming office. The new scheme will add more obstacles to students, researchers, exchange workers and foreign journalists that now face tight timelines.
According to official data, around 1.6 million international students were on F Visa in the US in 2024. In the same year, the country also released around 355,000 exchange visitor visas and 13,000 media visas.
Most Indian students visit the US for underground (4 years) or master (1-2 years). Since the proposal fixes the FIV duration in a maximum of 4 years, these students are usually covered (they can finish on time).
But if someone needs extra time (a course fails, research delays, thesis expansion), then they will now need to apply for an extension rather than continuing under the old “status period” system.
How does this affect India’s PhD and long research scholars?
This is where it is pinch. PhD usually takes 5-7 years. With the new 4-year-old CAP, an Indian PhD student will be forced to apply for an extension mediagle through his research.
The issue is that the extensions are not automatic and is a difficult process that includes paperwork, investigation and potential denial. This adds uncertainty for students in long academic tracks.
Will Indian journalists be affected?
For Indian journalists posted in the US, the new border is 240 days, and for Chinese/Hong Kong Passport, 90 days according to the news agency report. This means that Indian correspondents covering the US may require more often to apply again by adding to red tape.
What about young Indian researchers, intern and Indian doctors?
India also sends young researchers, doctors and intern on J visa. These will also be capted in 4 years, which means any long -term exchange programs will require extension.
