According to the data released by the Ministry of External Affairs, a total of 1335878 students are pursuing higher education abroad in 2024.
In response to questions regarding students going abroad to study, the Ministry of External Affairs has informed that currently more than 13.35 lakh students are pursuing higher education in foreign countries.
Indian Missions/Posts abroad regularly engage with Indian students studying abroad and encourage them to register either with them or on the Global Rishta Portal. They organize “Welcome Ceremonies” for Indian students travelling abroad for the first time and brief them on security issues in the host countries. They also advise them to register with the Indian Missions/Posts and stay connected regularly. Indian Missions/Posts use the above method to collect data of Indian students abroad through voluntary registration. Indian Missions/Posts abroad also coordinate with relevant authorities in host governments to secure data on the number of Indian students studying abroad,” replied Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh.
According to data released by the Ministry of External Affairs, a total of 1335878 students are pursuing higher education abroad in 2024, which has increased from 1318955 in 2023.
There has been an increase in the number of students going abroad as compared to the pre-Covid year. As per the available data, a total of 675541 students went abroad to pursue their higher education in 2019. The number saw a drop in 2022, where only 907404 students started their studies abroad, while 1158702 students had enrolled in foreign universities in 2021.

The top five countries chosen by Indian students for studying abroad are Canada, US, UK, Australia and Germany. According to official data, 427000 students enrolled in universities in Canada, 337630 in US, 18500 in UK, 122202 in Australia and 42997 in Germany.
Compared to the previous year data, student enrolment in Canada witnessed a decline as 427000 students enrolled in 2024 while 427085 students enrolled in 2023.
The number of students opting for higher education in Russia and Ukraine saw a decline as 24940 students chose Russia and 2510 Ukraine. A total of 23515 students opted for higher education in Ukraine in 2022.
