Dr. Sudipto De, a cancer surgeon specializing in precision oncology and genomics from Faridabad, is raising awareness about the various methods used to detect lung cancer – from advanced imaging and biopsy techniques to multiple diagnostic tests that help identify the disease in its early stages.
In a 2024 Instagram video posted on December 12, the oncologist explains, “Except for routine blood tests, which are all done to assess a patient’s health and their ability to take treatment, lung cancer has some very specific tests that are done to find out how far the disease has progressed, and what type of disease it is.”
He highlights the two primary types of scans used in detecting lung cancer, as well as several supplemental tests that provide a more comprehensive diagnostic picture.

According to Dr. Dey, lung cancer tests can be divided into two major categories, the first being imaging, which includes CT scans of the chest or PET scans of the whole body, to find out where the disease is located, and other ancillary tests to assess the spread of the disease. He explains, “Imaging includes local imaging such as CT scan of the thorax or chest cavity or PET-CT to scan the entire body. Additionally, MRI brain can also be performed to assess the condition of the brain in metastatic cases.”

Dr. Dey explains that the second method of investigation is biopsy, which can be done in two ways. “The biopsy involves either a CT-guided or bronchoscopic guided biopsy depending on the location of the tumor,” he noted, “This biopsy is very essential to diagnose the type of cancer you have, as well as to find specific targets on which drugs can be given, which has had very good results.”

other tests
Apart from the two major methods, oncologists also mention some other tests that can be done – “There are also some other tests that can be done, like EBUS, or mediastinoscopy, or thoracoscopy, to detect and biopsy the small lymph nodes present in the chest cavity.”
