1.The world’s only ‘Living Fort’
Sonar Fort of Jaisalmer is one of the few forts in the world where thousands of people still live. It is called Living Fort because it is not only a historical structure but also a living city.
2.Why was it named ‘Sonar Fort’?
The yellow sandstone of the fort shines like gold in the sunlight. This golden aura gave it the name ‘Sonar Kila’ i.e. Golden Fort.
3. Satyajit Ray’s film increased worldwide recognition
The 1974 Feluda film Sonar Kila made Jaisalmer iconic among Bengalis and the rest of the country. Many scenes of the film were shot in this fort and its streets.
4.99 Big fort with towers
A total of 99 defense bastions have been built in the fort, out of which 92 are still standing strong. This is a wonderful example of the security and architecture of the fort.
5. ‘Desert Port’ without sea
Despite being situated in the desert of Rajasthan, Jaisalmer was once considered a trading ‘desert port’. From here trade took place till Afghanistan, Persia and Arab countries.
6.800 years old history
The fort was built by Raja Rawal Jaisal in 1156 AD. Its history is about 8 centuries old and many war and Rajput stories are recorded in it.
Inside the Sonar Fort, there are Jain temples built in the 12th-15th centuries, whose carvings are so fine that even the marble art of Agra seems pale.
8. Narrow streets and maze-like structure
The streets of the fort are very narrow and maze-like. This is the reason why it was very difficult for the enemy army to enter the fort.
9.UNESCO World Heritage Site
Jaisalmer Fort is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is considered to be one of the safest and most beautiful forts of Rajasthan.
Every day, tourists are found in Sonar Fort who recreate the famous scenes from Feluda’s film – the walls, roof and streets of the fort. This is also a kind of ‘film tourism’ for Bengali tourists.
