Nirf rankings 2025: The Indian Institute of Technology, Patna is the only institution in Bihar, which is in the top 100 of the overall ranking of the National Institutional Framework Rankings (NIRF) released on Thursday.
IIT-P is also ranked 39th in the list of top 100 research institutes, while it ranks 19th in the list of engineering institutions. Bihar’s only other organization NIT, Patna is ranked 53rd in the list of engineering institutions.
IIT -P has greatly improved its position since 2024 – from the 73rd to 36th position – although the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), PATNA has slipped from the top 100 overall rankings to finish in the rank band of 101-150.
In the stream of law, Chanakya National Law University (Patna) and Central University of South Bihar (CUSB), Gaya were ranked 17th and 23rd in the list of 40 top institutions respectively, in which NLU (Bangalore) and NLU (Delhi) were occupying the top two slots. CUSB has been ranked in 151-200 bands in the category of universities.
The Central University of South Bihar (CUSB), Gaya also gives figures at the 63rd rank in the list of top 100 pharmacy institutions in the country, while the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Hazipur is ranked 30th.
Among the top 50 medical colleges, AIIMS (Patna) was ranked 27th, the same which was held last year, while in the top 100 management institutes, IIM (Bodh Gaya) figures were 31st position and Amity University (Patna) in the rank band of 101–125.
In the ranking of 40 agricultural colleges, Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University and Bihar Agricultural University have been ranked 14 and 36th respectively. Rajendra Prasad is in the ranking band of 101-150 in the Central Agricultural University category.
In the NIRF rankings of colleges, Patna Women’s College is the place to find a loan institution in the 101-159 rank band.
For both universities and colleges, the NIRF rankings was a reality check for state institutions, as no one in the top 100 could provide facility. Even in the list of public universities of the state, Bihar secured a vacant space.
The central institute, which has come in large numbers in the last few decades, saved the day for the state.
The premiere of Bihar, Patna University, was the seventh oldest university in the country, the only state university, which was ranked in 2024 NIRFs, ranked in the state’s public universities in the 51-100 limits. This year, it is not in the 51–100 rank band.
In the overall ranking for the universities of the country, no university in the state tells the story of the state’s higher education institutions that still proud of the heritage of Naland University and Vikramashila University, which are ancient seats of learning that attract students and scholars around the world.
“Bihar institutions have seen a systemic decline over the years and cosmetic remedies will not fulfill this objective. It is not that state institutions cannot improve, but the problem is not that there is no interest beyond investment for infrastructure. Quality leadership has a complete decrease in the leadership, which is a cascading effect,” Social Analyst Professor NK Chaudhary said.
