BMW India delivers its best performance so far in 2024 but it’s no time to relax.
The luxury car and bike market in the country has expanded significantly in recent years and two main rivals are competing to gain greater prominence. The performance of both Mercedes-Benz India and BMW Group India has never been so good here and with all indications of being even more profitable in the coming year 2025, it is expected that the sales momentum will continue. But what is the sudden change that is bringing more Indian customers into the luxury vehicle segment?
For Vikram Pavah, President and CEO, BMW Group India, the sales jump is largely due to a more aspirational India that is focusing on driving the best the market has to offer rather than pushing back plans. He should know because his company recorded its best ever annual car sales at 15,721 units, an increase of 11 percent. BMW Motorrad sold 8,301 motorcycles in the last calendar year. “People want more luxury products. “India is becoming more aspirational, more ambitious, more demanding in what they want,” he told HT Auto on the sidelines of Auto Expo 2025. “For me, this is the focus point – we are building a new India. How to address the need. The new India clearly has a new need and I am glad we are addressing that part now.

Pava also stressed the need for disruptive products in the market to meet the needs of the emerging customers in the country. At the Auto Expo 2025, BMW launched five products across the BMW, BMW Motorrad and Mini brands. The main showstoppers here were the BMW iX1 long wheelbase, the updated BMW X3 and the BMW R 1300 GS adventure bike. “I can tell you that in just 24 hours since launch, the feedback and bookings we are receiving for the iX1 LWB is phenomenal. This is because it is actually addressing a need that people want. Pavah said that we have launched it after a lot of research on how the society is developing, especially how the new generation is developing.
So is the luxury EV battle almost won? BMW has a 43 per cent share in the luxury EV sector and while Pawah has always been particularly proud of the iX SUV being the country’s best-selling luxury EV, he specifically singled out the i7 sedan as his company’s top performer in 2024. Our EV models meet very specific requirements. At the top are the iX and i7 and both have performed very well. The iX1 has also been very well received by first-time buyers and the iX1 LWB will help take this model forward.”
Asked to look into the crystal ball for the year ahead, Pavah concluded that he is confident of BMW being on track for another record year.
