Kidneys are important, life-diligent organs, but poor lifestyle options and unhealthy diets can increase the risk of renal stone formation. These stones formed by the manufacture of salts and minerals can cause acute pain, discomfort and complications when untreated.

In an interview with HT lifestyle, Dr. Mohit Khirbat, Advisor, Nephrology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram said, “Lifestyle and alert dietary practices can perform miracles to maintain your kidneys free from top positions and stones.” Also read Do you think you are safe from kidney stones? Dr. Mohit Khirbat made some suggestions to avoid kidney stones before proceeding:

1. Drink plenty of fluids

Drinking enough water to avoid kidney stones is the best and easiest way. Proper hydration makes it easier to dilute minerals and salts in the urine, thus reducing the possibility of making them stone. If you are a heavy sweater, drink 8-10 glasses per day.

2. Avoid consumption of extra salt

Increased sodium content causes more calcium loss through urine, which increases the chances of stone formation. Reduce processed foods, salty snacks and excessive table salt to help save your kidneys.

3. Regular balanced calcium intake

What many people think, on the contrary, completely eliminating calcium from your diet can increase the risk of your kidney stones. Include calcium foods in the moderation as the diet combines with oxalate in the calcium intestines and prevents it from reaching the urine. 4. Cut oxalate-desert foods

Foods such as spinach, beat, nuts and chocolate are rich in oxalates, which can tie with calcium to make stones. You don’t have to cut them completely, but reduce their frequency – especially if you have renal stones in the past.

5. Increase plant-based protein

Animal-protein-rich foods form uric acid levels, which develop in uric acid stones. Try to include more plant-based proteins such as lentils, beans and tofu in your diet.

6. Avoid sugars drinks

Cola, soda, and sweet beverages may increase the risk of stones due to their high sugar and phosphoric acid content. Water and fresh juices are better options. Also read Are you afraid of kidney stones? Surgeons say avoid these 7 foods: meat, caffeine, juice

7. Keep a healthy weight

Obesity can change the acid-base balance in the urine, making stones more likely to form. Regular exercise and a balanced diet can help maintain a healthy weight and support kidney health.
