The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government has significantly increased funding for railway, highway and airport projects as well as social and rural sector schemes in Tamil Nadu over the past ten years, according to a government official.
The official, who did not wish to be named, said the central government has given unprecedented impetus to the development of railways in Tamil Nadu in the last decade.
The remarks came after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s remarks in which he reportedly spoke about not getting funds for some of the state’s projects. Media reports had highlighted Stalin’s criticism of the BJP and his complaints about not getting funds for major projects like the Chennai Metro.
Between 2009 and 2014, the budget allocated to Tamil Nadu for railway development averaged around 879 crores per year. However, the Centre has now allocated a record budget A provision of Rs 6,331 crore has been made for railways in the state for 2024-25, which is a seven-fold increase, the official said.
The official said, “As a result of this record budget, work on construction of new railway lines, electrification, running of new trains, development of stations and enhancement of passenger amenities is being carried out at a record level in Tamil Nadu.”
Stalin’s statements about the state being neglected by the central government in project clearances are far from the truth. The official reiterated that the current NDA government has significantly increased funding for railways, highways, airports and various social and rural schemes in Tamil Nadu in the last decade.
Emails sent to the Finance Ministry and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Office on Friday seeking comment on this story remained unanswered till the time of publication.
