NCERT will release new textbooks only for classes 3 to 6: CBSE tells schools

In a release sent to heads of all CBSE affiliated institutions, the board on Friday said NCERT has informed it through a letter dated March 18 that new syllabus and textbooks for classes 3 and 6 are currently under development. and will be released soon. It has advised schools to follow these new curriculum and textbooks for classes 3 and 6 in place of the textbooks published by NCERT by the year 2023.

The Council is preparing new school textbooks in line with the new National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023 as a part of the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. HT had reported on March 17 that NCERT was unlikely to come out with textbooks for all classes before this academic year, and would continue with the existing rationalized textbooks for most classes.

“A bridge course for Class 6 and brief guidelines for Class 3 are being developed by NCERT to facilitate a seamless transition of students to new pedagogical practices and areas of study in line with NCF-SE 2023. These resources will be disseminated to all schools. Online after receipt from NCERT,” CBSE said.

In addition, the Board will also organize capacity building programs for school heads and teachers to orient them to the new teaching learning approach envisaged in NEP-2020.

“There will be no change in the syllabus and textbooks of other classes for the academic year 2024-25 starting from April 1, 2024,” the board said.

The Board has advised schools to follow the NCF-SE recommendations and incorporate practices such as multilingualism, arts-integrated learning, experiential learning and pedagogical plans wherever possible.

“Schools are advised to align their practices with the recommendations outlined in NCF-SE-2023. This includes adherence to the guidelines relating to content, pedagogical strategies, assessment methods and other relevant areas notified by the Board from time to time,” the Board said.

In 2022, NCERT had rationalized the syllabus for classes 6 to 12 to “reduce the content load” on students in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the changes reflected in the new textbooks published last year, the council had removed chapters on Mughal courts, the 2002 Gujarat riots, the Cold War, references to Mughal emperors and the Emergency and the periodic table. While the council said there has been no selective omission of subjects, the rationalization exercise has created a political controversy with leaders of opposition parties accusing the ruling government of “erasing history”.
