A NASA astronaut was hospitalized due to medical concerns after returning from a nearly eight-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The space agency broke the news on October 25 but did not disclose the specific issue. According to the Associated Press, the astronaut is reported to be in stable condition and hospitalized as a precaution.
The astronauts returned to Earth earlier in the week aboard a SpaceX capsule with three fellow crew members, including two more Americans and a Russian. After undocking from the ISS, their capsule landed in the Gulf of Mexico just off the coast of Florida.
After splashdown, the crew was brought back, and a recovery team performed routine medical checks. Shortly afterward, the NASA astronaut showed signs of a health problem and was taken to a Pensacola hospital for further evaluation as a precautionary measure, the AP said.
NASA has not disclosed the astronaut’s identity or any condition details, citing an individual’s right to privacy. Meanwhile, the other three astronauts were cleared and have returned to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.
The astronauts were originally scheduled to return two months ago, but their trip was delayed. Technical problems with Boeing’s new Starliner capsule prevented its use for the mission, and Hurricane Milton, followed by rough seas and high winds, further postponed the homecoming.
Elon Musk’s SpaceX launched the team in March, which included NASA astronauts Matthew Dominic, Michael Barrett, Janet Epps and Russia’s Alexander Grebenkin.
Barrett, an experienced astronaut, later expressed his gratitude to the support teams for helping him adapt to unexpected changes and deal with the challenges of the mission.
The space station now operates with its typical seven-man crew of four Americans and three Russians.
Potential health problems for astronauts
It is difficult for the body to return to Earth after being in space for several months. Without gravity, muscles and bones weaken in space, leading to problems such as weak muscles, low blood pressure and poor balance when astronauts return.
Vision may become blurry, and they often feel tired. Doctors help him recover, but it takes several weeks for him to fully adjust to Earth’s gravity.
