Indian pilot Captain Gopichand Thotakura, along with six other crew members, will blast off into space tomorrow on Blue Origin’s NS-25 mission.
The NS-25 crew will fly beyond the Karman Line – the boundary that separates the Earth’s atmosphere and outer space – and return to Earth.
The expedition team will send postcards to space on behalf of the Club for the Future, a program designed to inspire and support the next generation of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) professionals.
Who is Captain Gopichand Thotakura?
Astronaut Captain Gopichand Thotakura from Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh will be the first civilian and second Indian to go to space.
His flight will be the first to land in space exploration in four decades, after Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma’s journey on Soyuz T-11 in 1984.
This mission marks India’s re-entry into the space race and will also create history with its prestigious crew of astronauts.
Proud to represent India in the mission, he said the visit epitomizes the spirit of human endeavour. Gopichand will wear the Indian flag badge for the flight.
“As the first civilian Indian astronaut to embark on this historic journey with Blue Origin’s NS-25 mission, I am honored to represent India on this journey. India is making its mark in space exploration across the world.”
Gopi said, “This journey symbolizes the spirit of human endeavor and ingenuity on a global scale. I hope this exploration will inspire future generations of STEAM professionals as we push the boundaries of space exploration together.”
