He is Chitragupta Srivastava. He was born on 16 November 1917 in Gopalganj, Bihar. Chitragupt Srivastava is still remembered for his simple and beautiful tunes. Today is his birth anniversary. Chitragupta, who did MA in Economics from Patna University, stepped into the Mayanagari of Mumbai and left an indelible mark in the world of music through ‘B’ and ‘C’ grade films. His cultural roots were related to the indigenous folk tradition of Bihar, a light touch of which is reflected in every song of his and this was also his specialty.
Took training in classical music
Chitragupta took formal education in classical music from Pandit Shivprasad Tripathi and also used to practice with the help of Bhatkhande Music School in Lucknow. Yet music critics rarely count him among the first-rate greats. But his folk based and melodious compositions proved that he is an artist who gives extra softness to the songs without giving away the folk color.
Gave music to more than 100 films
Despite the struggle, he moved ahead and gave music in more than 100 films. His early films include ‘Toofan Queen’, ‘Eleven O’Clock’, ‘Bhakt Pundalik’, ‘Nag Panchami’, ‘Bhakt Puran’, ‘Jodidar’, ‘Naya Raasta’, ‘Hamari Shaan’, ‘Stunt Queen’, ‘Lady Robinhood’, ‘Jai Hind’, ‘Joker’, ‘Delhi Express’, ‘Shakehand’. Most of these films were B grade, but he left a special impression of melody in every film. At the same time, a glimpse of his immortal songs can be seen in other songs of ‘Kali Topi Lal Rumal’ including ‘Laagi Chhote Na Ab To Sanam’, ‘Burma Road’, ‘Dagabaaz Ho Banke Piya’.

Along with Bollywood, he also gave a lot to Bhojpuri cinema. Chitragupta gave a new identity to Bhojpuri films. ‘Ganga Maiya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo’ was released in the year 1962. This was the first Bhojpuri film, which created a stir in the world of cinema. Apart from this, his folk element is clearly visible in ‘Laagi Nahi Chhote Ram’, ‘Bhauji’, ‘Ganga’. The songs of these films still resonate in the villages of Bihar-UP. Chitragupta’s sons Anand-Milind carried forward his legacy and their pairing spread the magic of the same melody in many successful films.
