“Most Indians are unhealthy. Not because of their diet, but because of their parents.” This thing has come from MBBS doctor Dr. Mansafa Bepari. According to her Twitter (now X) bio, she is a women’s health coach.

Dr. Mansafa Bepari has posted a video on social media, asking youth in their 20s and 30s to be more aware about nutrition. She blames the parents and tells everyone not to get angry before hearing the whole story.

“Our parents and grandparents lived in a food-scarce society where it made sense to eat more but now things have changed,” the video caption says.

“When your parents grew up, they worked long hours, they worked on farms, they walked for kilometres, and their lives were less stressful. So, statements like ‘eat more rice, ghee is medicine, finish your plate completely’ make sense,” she says in the video.

“But, now, your life is highly stressed. You barely move for work, and you spend hours sitting. So, these statements no longer make sense,” she adds.

Dr. Mansafa Bepari then gives an example of how people nowadays eat their food on a daily basis. Breakfast is rich in sugar and refined carbohydrates. Lunch consists of a large portion of rice, and dinner consists only of a light, heavy, carbohydrate-rich meal.

“And then, you get visceral obesity, thyroid problems, gut problems, weight problems, high blood pressure, diabetes and low energy in your 20s and 30s,” Dr. Mansafa Bepari says in the video.

“Nutrition is not emotional. Respect your parents, but learn nutrition. Learn it for yourself… Learn about nutrition, exercise on YouTube. There are many reliable videos available,” she adds.

Social media users posted mixed reactions to the video.

“Definitely true. Besides, habits like finishing the plate even when the stomach is full, so as not to waste food, are habits learned from periods of deprivation,” commented one of them.

Another wrote, “Absolutely. Parents/grandparents aged 60+ always try to force kids/adults to eat more. In India, food is equated with love: eat more, eat a little more, one more paratha, I swear to you. There are many factors leading to obesity and overzealous parents/grandparents are one of them.”

“In the times of our grandparents, heart problems and sugar were problems of upper class people because useless MNC-marketed products were out of mind. But, now, MNCs tell what to eat, please look at the disaster in Mexico,” posted another.

Many social media users disagree

There are some users who disagree with Dr. Manasfa Bepari.

One of them wrote, “Parents say all the things you mentioned, but they also say we should exercise and try to eat as much whole food or “home food” as possible and limit junk food. Plus, we ignore the latter and follow the former. So, whose fault is it, the parents or us?”

“Sorry, but that’s not true. Nowadays every product is adulterated; we don’t know whether the ghee we eat is pure or not,” came from another.

Another user commented, “Disagree. Habits like finishing food even when full means not overloading your plate in the first place. This was actually a way to motivate us not to waste. Even now, I take a spoonful of what I want to eat, taste it and only then add more if I like it,” another user commented.

Another user defended the parents, saying, “The easiest thing to do is to blame the parents for our mistakes instead of understanding our bad habits and lifestyle. Our body was never made for three meals a day. Every living being has to work hard to get food, but, nowadays we are getting food without much effort, this is the main reason.”

“Can’t completely agree with you, because people who are following a very heavy gym routine are also disrespecting the Indian diet and lying on whey and steroids. I am following a simple routine by aiming to walk 10,000 steps daily and consuming ghee, rice, roti, potatoes, dal regularly,” commented another.
