Over 1.45 lakh students across the university’s North and South campuses cast their votes in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections till 5.45 pm on Friday, an official statement said.
According to the office of DUSU Chief Electoral Officer, a total of 1,45,893 students from 52 colleges had cast their votes till 5.45 pm to elect the new president, vice president, secretary and joint secretary.
The data of remaining colleges has not been released yet.
Heavy police deployment was made in both North and South precincts for the smooth conduct of the elections. Policemen were seen patrolling the campus on motorcycles.
Voting is taking place in two phases. Students from morning colleges cast their votes till 1 pm and the second phase of voting for students from evening colleges started at 3 pm and will continue till 7.30 pm.
A total of 21 candidates are in the fray, eight for the post of President, five for Vice President and four each for the post of Secretary and Joint Secretary.

RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Congress-backed National Students Union of India (NSUI), leftist student organization All India Students Association (AISA) and Students Federation of India (SFI) are the major players this year.
At present, ABVP has the largest number of seats in the student union and holds the posts of President, Vice President and Joint Secretary. The post of Secretary is occupied by NSUI.
Speaking to PTI video, national leaders of both ABVP and NSUI expressed confidence that their respective candidates would win.
“ABVP has been campaigning extensively for the elections for the last few days. We were able to reach out to around one lakh students during this period. ABVP has had a strong presence in DUSU for many years. We have been consistently standing by. ” Students raised their concerns.
ABVP national general secretary Yagyavalkya Shukla said, “As a result, we are seeing positive response and getting support from students. We are confident that students are with us and ABVP will win the elections 4-0.”
NSUI President Varun Choudhary said, “This year’s elections are not normal. These are important to save the university. In the last few years, a culture of violence has emerged in the university because of ABVP. We have promised a violence-free campus. “
“Besides, we have also promised to address issues like paper leaks and fee control,” he said.
A close contest is expected between ABVP’s Rishabh Chaudhary, NSUI’s Raunak Khatri and AISA’s Savi Gupta for the post of president.
Rishabh Chaudhary, a resident of Ganaur, Sonipat, graduated from Shyam Lal College and is currently a student of the Department of Buddhist Studies. Savi Gupta is a third year law student at Law Center-2.
Bhanu Pratap Singh from ABVP, Yash Nandal from NSUI and Ayush Mandal from AISA are in the fray for the post of Vice President.
ABVP has made Mitravinda Karnawal, a third year student of History (Hons) at Lakshmibai College, its candidate for the post of Secretary. He is pitted against Namrata Jeff Meena of NSUI and Anamika K of SFI.
Aman Kapasia, a Hindi (Hons) graduate from PGDAV Evening College, is ABVP’s choice for the post of joint secretary and will face NSUI’s Lokesh Chaudhary and SFI’s Sneha Agarwal.
In an order passed on Thursday, the Delhi High Court had stayed the counting of votes for the DUSU elections till the restoration of public property damaged by posters, hoardings and graffiti.
