Maintaining vaginal hygiene:

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Sucheta Parte, Consultant – Obstetrician & Gynecologist at Motherhood Hospitals, Lullanagar, Pune, explained, “The humid and damp conditions during monsoon can create an ideal environment for the growth of harmful bacteria and fungus, increasing the risk of vaginal infections. Pregnant women have a lower immunity, which also increases the chances of infections.”

Suggesting pregnant women to be vigilant about maintaining intimate hygiene, Dr Sucheta Parte advised, “Wear breathable, cotton undergarments and avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes. Wipe from front to back after using the toilet to prevent the spread of bacteria. If you notice symptoms such as itching, burning, abnormal discharge or foul odor, consult your gynaecologist, as these could be signs of a vaginal infection such as a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis. Early treatment is important to prevent complications.”

Solution for Urinary Tract Infection (UTI):

Noting that the risk of developing a urinary tract infection (UTI) increases during pregnancy, especially because of the humidity during the monsoon season, Dr Sucheta Parte suggests, “Drink plenty of water, urinate frequently and maintain good hygiene to reduce the chances of a UTI. If you experience symptoms such as a burning sensation while urinating, pain in the lower abdomen or frequent urination, consult a doctor immediately.”

Management of vaginal itching and burning:

Dr. Sucheta Parte explains, “The increased humidity and sweating during monsoons can lead to extreme itching and irritation in the vagina. Avoid using harsh soaps or douching, which can disrupt the natural pH balance. Instead, use mild, fragrance-free intimate hygiene products. If itching persists or worsens, consult your gynaecologist to find out the underlying cause and get proper treatment.”

Preventing other gynecological problems:

“Pregnancy during the monsoon season can also increase the risk of other gynaecological problems, such as bacterial or viral infections, pelvic inflammatory disease or preterm labour. Get regular prenatal check-ups, report any unusual symptoms to your doctor and follow their instructions to address any concerns promptly,” warns Dr Sucheta Parte.

Staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged humidity:

Dr Sucheta Parte emphasises that drinking plenty of water during the monsoon season is very important to maintain vaginal health, “Dehydration can cause an imbalance in the vaginal pH, making pregnant women more prone to infections. Also, avoid spending long periods of time in contact with moisture or sitting in wet clothes, as this can create a favourable environment for the growth of harmful microorganisms.”

Adopting natural remedies:

Dr. Sucheta Parte explains, “Certain natural remedies may help alleviate some of the vaginal discomforts during the monsoon season. For example, adding probiotics to your diet may help restore the balance of beneficial bacteria in the vagina. Additionally, using soothing, gentle essential oils such as tea tree oil or lavender oil may help relieve itching and irritation when applied topically (after consulting your healthcare provider).”

Seeking timely medical help:

If you notice any persistent or worrying symptoms like abnormal vaginal discharge, severe itching or pelvic pain, do not hesitate to consult your gynaecologist. Timely intervention can prevent complications and ensure proper management of any underlying condition.

Be alert and proactive:

Dr. Sucheta Parte explains, “By being proactive about vaginal health, UTIs and other gynecological issues, pregnant women can approach the monsoon season with more confidence and reduce the risk of complications for themselves and their unborn baby. Regular checkups with your healthcare provider and implementation of good hygiene practices can help ensure a healthy and comfortable pregnancy during the monsoon. Remember, addressing vaginal and gynecological concerns during the monsoon season is crucial for the well-being of both the mother and the growing baby. Be vigilant, seek medical help when necessary and prioritize your overall reproductive health during this challenging time.”
