Mariyam Shiuna of Maldives’ ruling party, who was suspended from the post of minister for making derogatory remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, does not seem to be desisting from her actions. Now he has insulted the national flag of India while targeting the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Actually, Maryam had shared MDP’s campaign poster on social media, in which the party’s logo was placed instead of Ashok Chakra on the tricolor.
Mariam, who is associated with the party of Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu, wrote in her post, ‘MDP is moving towards a big decline. The people of Maldives do not want to fall and slip with them.
Shiuna again apologized ‘sincerely’
Maryam Shiuna deleted her post after huge protests and expressed regret for causing any kind of confusion or hurting sentiments. Referring to ‘Maldives’ deep respect for India’, he clarified that the similarity with the Indian flag in the photo was unintentional. He wrote, ‘Maldives greatly values its relations and our mutual respect with India. In the future, I will be more cautious in verifying the content I share to prevent such mistakes.
Maldives Minister Mariam Shiuna once again mocked India while targeting political rival MDP in the elections. This shows the Indian flag in bad light.

Even though Shiuna has expressed regret for her post, Indian social media users became very angry with her. Actually, Shiuna had earlier made a derogatory post regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep. However, after controversy arose over this, he deleted his post. She was dismissed by President Muizzu from the post of Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts, although she remains active in the party.

Maldives accepted India’s favor
This incident came to light when Maldives Foreign Minister Musa Zameer had expressed gratitude for India allowing export of essential goods to Maldives. In fact, India on Friday lifted the ban on export of specified quantities of certain commodities like eggs, potatoes, onions, rice, wheat flour, sugar and pulses to Maldives during the current financial year. Regarding this, Jamir said that this decision is a symbol of long-term bilateral friendship and commitment to increase trade and commerce.
Responding to Jamir’s post, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that India is strongly committed to its Neighborhood First and SAGAR policies. Despite strained relations under the Mohammed Muizzu government, India remains an important economic partner for the Maldives, supplying essential commodities such as rice and medicine.
