India’s education system means, which does not prepare students for life. Life literacy with flexibility, option and purpose is the missing piece.

Step into any class in India, and this is the same old story. You will see students grinding formulas and grinding through old exam papers, for all marks. Over the years, our education system has defined success by grade and test score. Indeed, this approach produces a significant number of engineers, doctors and MBAs. The problem is that, it does not fully prepare young people what life will actually throw at them.
Let’s be honest: the system is broken. This shows children how to pass an exam, not to deal with ambiguity. This bribes them for compliance, not curiosity. Technical skills are elevated in a pedestal, while adaptability, imagination, and plain old self-knowledge are left behind. But those efficiency are the most counted in our dynamic, rapidly changing world.
Missing component: life literacy
So, what is the missing piece? This is something that we can call life literacy.
Life literacy is only a skill to understand yourself, make good options, and build a life that seems meaningful. It is known how to handle failure, how to build good relationships, when things are not clear, how to find your path, and how to create a real balance between work and your good. This is about children getting ready for life, not only one job.
Children should learn this stuff quickly. They should try their interests with small experiments and learn failures not as failures, but as a reaction. They need to notice what they are energetic and what drains they build, and then build a life that really fits who they are. Do not say these “soft skills”. They are basic tools to live a good life.
Should there be a goal for education
Education should be more than workforce development. Its real mission is to help in increasing the entire individuals: inquiries, compassionate, meaning-building, and flexibility in front of adversity.
The ancient Greeks said this Udimonia, which means a well -live life of purpose. Even contemporary psychology refers to it with concepts such as the perma model of Martin Celigman, as components of welfare with positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning and achievement.
As long as our schools teach young people meanings and how to be flexible, the most bright graduation with the highest degree is not knowing how to cope with the real world.
Designing your life approach
A great way to think about this comes from a structure called Bill Burnett and Dave Evans in Stanford. The main idea is to treat your life like a design project. You do not have to find out all this at once. Instead, you try things, build prototypes of your life, and learn as you move forward.
This approach asks students to stop from asking impossible questions, “What do you want to be when growing up?” And start asking better: What are you energetic? Are the problems excited to solve you? What a good life will really look like for you?
Instead of feeling paralyzed by making the choice of “right” career on 18, students can imagine many different futures. They can run small experiments to test them and learn that failures are just data. Like Burnett and Evans say: “You can’t know what you want to be. You can only know what you want to do.”

Your life method does not deny designing academics; This simply keeps them in the broader context of the whole life. It inspires students to reflect what work really means for them and it aligns with their personal values. This invites them to focus on their energy so that they can know whether the work energize them and what the drains include them. It encourages using career ideas based on testing through discussion or quick projects without investing a lot of time.
Above all, it helps them fight negative beliefs, such as “there is only a right career for me,” and replacing them with healthy people, such as “there are many good lives that I can live.” This type of thinking prepares students for a world that does not have a career straight lines and is more important than the meaning of the meaning.
We can imagine the future of education
If India takes this notion of life literacy seriously, then the change will be shocking. Classes will have spaces of contemplation, not only memoirs. Graduates will leave with more than a diploma; They will have a set of equipment for the creation of a rich life. “What’s next?” “What’s possible?” Failure will no longer be fear-raising; This bus will be part of the journey.
We start looking at the youth who define themselves from the ability to customize and create it not only by their exam score. We will have graduates that do not only look for jobs to fill, but who create a life that is full of purpose and joy.
Because, in the end, education is considered to help us create life, not just a living. If we start looking at education in this way, through lenses such as designing our life, we can achieve passion with scars and degrees. We can give the next generation a little more valuable: skills to be life-literate, not only to succeed in a job, but to flourish as people.
