In 2024, we will experience four Mercury retrograde cycles: December 13, 2023 to January 1, 2024; April 1 to April 24; August 4 to August 27; and November 25 to December 15.

Delhi-based astrologer Riddhi Bahl explains the reason for this, saying, “Mercury, which is often associated with our emotions, intellect and communication, can significantly impact these areas when it is retrograde. During this period, both positive and negative results are amplified.”
Astrologer Jay Madan adds a different perspective, “Mercury, the fastest moving planet, represents the brain and conscious mind. When retrograde, its energy is shifted inward rather than outward, potentially causing mood fluctuations.”
While Mercury retrograde does not directly cause mental health problems, it can exacerbate existing ones. “While Mercury retrograde does not create mental health challenges, it can exacerbate them. It is important to be aware of the increased possibility of mental confusion during this period,” says Bahl. Common symptoms include mood swings, difficulty expressing thoughts, and confusion.
Relationships also tend to be weaker during Mercury retrograde as the chances of misunderstanding and miscommunication increase. “Although Mercury retrograde doesn’t always spell trouble for relationships, it can exacerbate existing communication problems, leading to further confusion,” explains Riddhi Bahl. “Miscommunications and conflicts may occur more frequently as the chances of misunderstanding increase.”
“Communications with others can be stressful. You may say things you later regret, which can damage or even end relationships,” says Madan.

Although there is no way to avoid the potential challenges posed by Mercury retrograde, here are some tips that can help you get through this period more smoothly:
