Despite being specially abled, Sunil Kumar was never deterred by his physical condition.
Sunil Kumar, a lecturer at a government school in Khargat, Himachal Pradesh, is set to receive the National Teacher Award, the education ministry has announced. Kumar, the only teacher from the state to achieve this feat, will be honoured in New Delhi on Teachers’ Day on September 5. This year, the Himachal Pradesh government had nominated three teachers for the National Teacher Award, out of which Kumar was selected.
Kumar, a chemistry teacher at a government senior secondary school in Chamba district, joined the education department as a government servant in March 2008 and was promoted to the post of chemistry lecturer in 2016. During his tenure, 65 students were selected at the state level in the Children’s Science Congress.
Despite being disabled, Kumar never got deterred by his physical condition. Kumar said that when he was just eight months old, he was given polio medicine, which caused his disability. Even during summer vacations, he teaches children online through his YouTube channel.
School principal Satish Kaushal said, “This achievement has made Chamba and entire Himachal Pradesh proud. All Himachalis are proud of him.”
