Born on February 27, 1980, Sundararaj hails from the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. He studied BSc in Agriculture before switching his career to law enforcement. He was selected for IPS in 2003, after which he was assigned to the Chhattisgarh cadre. The officer has served there brilliantly. Sundararaj started his IPS career after his posting as Superintendent of Police in Korba district on September 5, 2003. His posting came shortly after Chhattisgarh became a separate state from Madhya Pradesh. The officer made his mark as a police officer by cracking down on criminals as well as carrying out his first encounter in the newly-formed state. The said encounter was with Chunnu Garg, a notorious criminal from Bilaspur. This criminal had taken a couple hostage and later fled to Korba. After this, an operation was conducted under the leadership of Sundarraj. A Nagar Sainik also died in this encounter, but the officer finally killed Chunnu. This operation is still considered a major achievement of Sundarraj.
Sundarraj has spent most of his career in Naxal-affected areas of Chhattisgarh, where he has served as Superintendent of Police (SP) in districts such as Surguja, Kabirdham, Rajnandgaon and Korba. The officer’s deep understanding of the area led to his promotion to the post of Deputy Inspector General of Dantewada. In 2016, he was transferred to the State Intelligence Bureau before being appointed as Inspector General in the central government.
As of now, Sundararaj is serving as Inspector General (IG) in Bastar region, holding this post since November 2021. Due to his effectiveness and dedication, his tenure was extended till the 2024 elections. The Election Commission of India has approved this extension. Sundararaj has played an important role in the ongoing fight against Naxalites. He also played an important role in conducting peaceful elections in 2018 and 2019.
