US President Donald Trump suggested that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States during his first call with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Carney confirmed this week.
The phone conversation took place on March 28, in which the US prepared a 25% tariff on Canada imports amidst increasing tension. Trump described the call as “extremely productive” at the time, while Carney portrayed it as “harmony” and “positive”.
Trump’s proposal: “Benefits” of joining America
According to two sources familiar with the conversation, New York Post said, Trump deferred Canada’s “profit” to join the United States.
Carney replied diplomatically, told Trump, “Let’s agree to disagree on that one,” before the leaders discussed business issues.
Carney downplay dispute
Carney initially left the 51st state proposal, when the call resumed, instead claimed that Trump “respected Canada’s sovereignty”. However, Carney clarified his position at a campaign stop in British Columbia.
Carney said, “The President brings it all the time. I told him,” It will never happen “… The President says a lot of things.”
Trump doubles: “Canada will stop living in existence”
Meanwhile, the White House refused to expand Trump’s earlier comments on the truth social.
Trump, however, strengthened his stance on Wednesday during an interview over time, he was not joking about the idea of the 51st state.
