Educational activities in government higher secondary schools in Manipur have been interrupted for the third consecutive day as more than 600 contractual teachers continue their pen-down strike. They are demanding regularization of their services and timely payment of salary, as reported by PTI.
The six-day strike, which started on Monday, was organized by Lecturers Association Manipur (2018 batch). Their goal is to implement a state cabinet decision from January 2022 that regulates their services and an April 2023 order for regular salary payment on April 2023 – both remain incomplete, according to both lecturers.
Lecturer S. Anita said, “We are performing our duties including election work, but still not regular salary. Many schools are affected, but we have no option.”
He said, “We understand the plight of the students, but we are also facing serious financial difficulties. We urge the government to complete the regularization process and release their salaries,” he told the news agency.
General classes have also been disrupted as students of various government schools, such as Johnstone Higher Secondary School and CC Higher Secondary School, protested at the school gates. He demanded that the officers address the concerns of their teachers to restore academic general situation.
Meanwhile, the West Bengal School Services Commission (WBSSC) has seen an extraordinary response with its latest recruitment drive. About 5.9 lakh candidates Applying for Assistant Teacher posts. This figure is almost double the number of applications received in 2016.
Senior officials have said that the Commission has received applications for 35,726 assistant teacher posts at secondary and higher secondary levels in state-driven and state-assessment schools. In contrast, around 3.16 lakh candidates applied for equal posts during the 2016 recruitment.
This new recruitment effort follows a Supreme Court’s directive released in April this year, which invalidated the appointments of 25,753 teaching and non-teaching staff in schools aided by the government as “tainted” the 2016 recruitment process. The court directed the state government and WBSSC to complete a new recruitment and complete the process by 31 December 2025.
