Preparing breakfast for our kids to go to school is an essential part of modern life as we cannot ignore or skip this important meal, no matter how time-crunched we are. A nutritious breakfast provides energy to the body, replenishes glucose levels, improves nutrient intake and promotes overall metabolic health.

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Nadia Merchant, Associate Director, Nutrition, Kellanova India, shared, “Breakfast provides children with an energetic start to the day and has a positive impact on cognitive functions such as attention and memory. Hence, it is important for children to build a positive association with breakfast and have a nutritious start to the day. For a nutritious and balanced breakfast, focus on including a variety of nutrient-rich foods; a mix of carbohydrates, fibre, protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals from cereals (cereals, millets, pulses), fruits, vegetables, nuts and dairy.”

He explains, “Breakfast cereals are made from a variety of grains, are naturally cholesterol-free, are generally low in fat and provide nutrients such as carbohydrates, protein and fibre. They are also rich in most essential vitamins and minerals that perform many important functions in the body. Ready-to-eat cereals are best eaten with milk or yoghurt and fruits/dried fruits. It is important to use your imagination and creativity to make children’s breakfast experience delicious, colourful and fun. Think about adding playful shapes, vibrant colours and a variety of textures to keep them excited about their morning meal. This way, we create a generation of breakfast eaters who want to start their day with a nutritious and fun meal.”

Dr. Vijay Yewale, Head of Department and Senior Consultant, Apollo Children’s Navi Mumbai said, “Making breakfast a priority for your children is important for their overall health and academic performance. A nutritious breakfast energizes their body and mind, setting a positive tone for the day. I recommend including a balance of protein, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates to maintain energy levels and improve concentration. For example, a meal that includes fruits like apple, banana or a bowl of oatmeal with nuts and berries provides the necessary nutrients and keeps children feeling full for longer.”

They concluded, “It is equally important to avoid sugary cereals and pastries, as they can lead to a lack of energy and impede cognitive function. Encouraging children to drink water or milk instead of sugary beverages can also make a significant difference. Remember, a balanced breakfast not only aids physical growth, but also boosts mental acuity, helping children perform better both in and out of the classroom.”
