Voting has been completed for 10 states/UTs in the first phase of Lok Sabha elections, as well as for state assemblies in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. These 10 states/UTs are Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Lakshadweep, Puducherry, Meghalaya, Uttarakhand and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
1. How much voting took place in which state?
Till 9 pm, about 62.37 percent voting was recorded in 102 Lok Sabha seats. The Election Commission said that despite the heat wave, high turnout was recorded in the first phase of voting for the General Elections 2024. The final voting percentage will be declared on Saturday.

Tripura recorded the highest turnout of about 80 percent, followed by West Bengal at 77 percent. In Tamil Nadu, voting took place in a single phase on April 19 for all Lok Sabha seats. The southern state recorded 72 percent voting till 7 pm.

2. Violence in Manipur
Voting took place on all two Lok Sabha seats – Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur – on Friday. The northeastern state, which has been battling violence since May last year, witnessed incidents of firing in the Imphal East region during voting on Friday.

According to news agency PTI, a dispute broke out between local people and unknown miscreants in Thongju assembly constituency under Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat. Manipur Chief Electoral Officer Pradeep Jha said that a report has been sought from the district administration. He further said that action will be taken against those involved in the dispute.
An incident of firing and clashes were also reported at a polling booth in Moirangkampu Sazeb Awang Likai in Imphal. “A civilian was injured in the incident,” news agency ANI said. informed of, “Suddenly two people came here and asked about the polling agents of Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He took the Congress agent out by holding his hand. Then two people opened fire from inside the car. One person was injured,” an officer said.
Jha informed Officials have received “some reports of some damage to EVMs, some criminal threats or someone trying to influence voters”.

3. Violence in West Bengal
Sporadic incidents of violence also marred the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in three parliamentary constituencies of Bengal. Several people were reported injured in the clash between Trinamool Congress (TMC) and BJP workers in the violence-hit Cooch Behar constituency.
Citing sources, PTI reported that TMC and BJP filed around 100 and 50 complaints respectively, related to election violence, intimidation of voters and attacks on election agents in the early hours of polling. Most of the complaints came from Cooch Behar.

TMC alleged that BJP workers attacked polling agents in Sitalkuchi and prevented voters from reaching some booths in Cooch Behar. However, BJP has denied these allegations and accused TMC of intimidating voters.
Apart from this, there is news of clash in Mathabhanga area also. According to PTI, both TMC and BJP workers suffered injuries. Both parties clashed with each other over allegations of voter intimidation.

A senior official said, “We have received some complaints and are looking into them. However, so far we have not received any report of any major incident of violence. The voting has been peaceful.” According to officials, Cooch Behar recorded 77.38 percent voting till 5 pm, while Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri recorded 75.54 and 79.33 percent voting respectively.
4.IED blast in Chhattisgarh, CRPF jawan died
A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan on security duty was killed when a shell from an Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL) accidentally exploded in Galgam village under Usoor police station area of Bijapur district, a police officer said. .

“Constable Devendra Kumar of CRPF’s 196th battalion was seriously injured in the blast and was airlifted to Jagdalpur, but he died during treatment,” the officer said.
In another incident, a CRPF assistant commandant was injured when an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by Naxalites exploded in Bhairamgarh police station area of Bijapur district, police told PTI. The incident took place near Chihka polling station under Bhairamgarh police station area when a team of security personnel was out on area dominance operation ahead of polling.

5. 2,500 voters cross India-Bangladesh border
On April 19, around 2,500 voters crossed the India-Bangladesh border fence to cast their votes in Tripura. For historical reasons, a large number of voters in Tripura had to live beyond the barbed wire fence. People who have attained legal age to vote are now enrolled in the voter list of Tripura. To facilitate voting, the border gates have been opened since morning.

Speaking to ANI, Hafizur Rahmanaz, an Indian national living on the Bangladesh side of the barbed wire fence, said that all the 50 voters living in his village are eager to cast their votes in this election.
“My name is Hafizur Rehman. I live on the other side of the fence. The situation is quite good. Voting is also going on smoothly. There are 19 families in which there are 50 voters. Most of them have voted in the morning and Rehman said, “The remaining voters will come soon to cast their votes.”
