Actress Saiyami Kher first tried to participate in the Ironman Triathlon, which involves cycling, swimming and running, in 2020. However, when she was fully trained, Covid struck and the race was cancelled. Last year, she aimed to do it again in New Zealand, but she met with an accident. This September, she will make her third attempt in Germany. “Hopefully, the third time will be successful,” she says.
Preparing for the race is quite challenging, but Kher is all set for it. “I am already training for six months. It includes swimming, cycling and running. Unfortunately, there are no roads left to cycle in Mumbai as everything has been dug up. So, I have an indoor training cycle at home. I also have a treadmill. Swimming training becomes a challenge as I can’t tan, so I have to go to the pool at 5 am,” she said, adding that her training includes three swimming sessions, four cycling sessions and three running sessions a week. “I will be swimming in open water in a lake for the race, so I try to go to Nashik for swimming as there is a lake near me. When I get time on weekends, I take my cycle in my car and go to Nashik,” she said.
The 31-year-old athlete has to put in 14-15 hours of training every week. “I love listening to old songs of Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar when I run. But in Ironman training you are not allowed to listen to music. So, it is even more challenging. It is eight hours that you have to spend with yourself and during that time all your fears, worries and thoughts come out because you are all alone,” she says.
Kher is showing through her films and real life how sports can help people. She is one of the few Bollywood actresses to do so. “Being a part of sports has kept me mentally stable and sustained me in the film industry. It is meditative and therapeutic for me. It pulls me through many dark phases in my life. I would love to light the torch of fitness in Bollywood. I hope to call myself a triathlete after completing this race,” she signs off.
