Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday, July 18, said the “confusion” over the job reservation bill will be taken up in the next cabinet meeting. He also said the state’s Congress government has decided to put on hold the bill mandating job reservation for Kannadigas in the private sector due to “some confusion”.
“A full discussion (on the subject) could not take place in the Cabinet meeting on Monday. By then reports had appeared in the media,” he told the Karnataka assembly, adding that there was some “confusion”.
Responding to Leader of Opposition R Ashoka’s demand to clarify the state government’s stand on the reservation Bill, he said, “We will clear those confusions in the next Cabinet meeting. Let us have a detailed discussion.”
Ashoka said Siddaramaiah changed his post on X (formerly Twitter) thrice, recalling the first post on 100 per cent reservation for Kannadigas in the private sector which was later deleted. He said the chief minister then posted another message saying there will be 50 per cent reservation for Kannadigas in the management category and 70 per cent in the non-management category.
He said, “Finally, you announced the suspension of the bill. It seems there is a Tughlaqi government in Karnataka.”
In his response, Siddaramaiah said, “This is not a Tughlaq government but a Siddaramaiah government. We will consider this bill in the next cabinet meeting.”
On Monday, the state cabinet approved the Karnataka State Employment Bill, 2024 for local candidates in industries, factories and other establishments, which provides that private companies will reserve jobs for Kannadigas.
The Bill states, “Any industry, factory or other establishment shall appoint fifty per cent local candidates in management categories and seventy per cent local candidates in non-management categories.” It adds that if the candidates do not have a secondary school certificate with Kannada language, they must pass a Kannada proficiency test specified by the ‘nodal agency’.
