Under mounting political pressure, US President Joe Biden on Thursday broke his silence on campus unrest over the war in Gaza, saying Americans have the right to demonstrate but not to spread violence.
“There is a right to protest, but not a right to create chaos,” Biden said in remarks at the White House.
As television images of campus unrest spread across the country in recent days aired on news networks, Biden has faced criticism for his handling of the situation. He was largely leaving it to his spokespeople to comment.
The Democratic president, who is seeking re-election in November, has moved cautiously in condemning anti-Semitism, while supporting the right of young Americans to protest and trying to limit long-term political damage.
Biden said both sides agree that peaceful dissent is important for democracy but violence will not be tolerated.
He said, “Destruction of property is not a peaceful protest. It is against the law. Vandalism, trespassing, breaking windows, closing campuses, forcing the cancellation of classes and graduations – none of this is a peaceful protest. “
Biden said the United States is not an authoritarian nation that silences critics but “the system must prevail.”
He said, “Dissent is essential to democracy, but dissent should never lead to chaos or deny the rights of others so that students are unable to complete a semester and a college education.”
Biden was asked whether state governors should call in National Guard troops to restore order if necessary, he replied “No.”
In response to a reporter’s question, Biden said that the campus protests have not forced him to reconsider his policies in the Middle East.
Student protesters are demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the divestment of schools from companies that support the Israeli government.
