Decreasing population becomes a problem
A major reason for the decreasing number of car drivers in Japan is the decreasing population of Japan. Japan’s population growth rate in 2021 was -0.5%, which means that Japan’s population is decreasing instead of increasing. Because of this, companies in Japan are facing a severe shortage of employees. At the same time, new drivers are not available for services like taxi and fleet. Drivers who have set the maximum age limit for driving are also retiring, due to which this crisis has deepened.
Nissan will bring driverless car
However, Japan seems to be trying to solve this problem with the help of technology. Japanese car manufacturer Nissan has recently announced the launch of cars equipped with self-driving technology. The company says that it will launch the first autonomous self-driving car in 2027. For this, the company is going to start testing the self-driving car in Yokohama city of Japan. The company is in talks with government officials on safety and regulation issues for such technology.
Self-driving cars have come under scrutiny in many parts of the world. However, the need for vehicles with such technological capabilities in Japan is much greater than in other developed countries. Kazuhiro Doi, vice president of Nissan Research and Advanced Engineering, said that Japan is facing a major transportation problem, which will become even bigger in the future. There may come a time when there will be no drivers left. He said that taxi and bus services in many cities of the country are already being affected due to the aging population, due to which many people will become unfit to drive.
