History:
The history of Self-Injury Awareness Day dates back to the 1800s when French psychiatrist Philippe Pinel documented the tendency of some of his psychiatric patients to harm themselves. In the early 20th century, self-harm was declared one of the symptoms of mental illness. Treatment through institutionalization and medication also began. In the 1990s, self-harm gained more momentum as health care professionals and researchers began exploring this behavioral habit more widely. In 1995, the first international conference on self-mutilation was held and in 1997, the International Society for the Study of Self-Injury was established.
Importance:
This day is celebrated with the intention of helping those who harm themselves and are afraid to seek professional help. This helps to address this unhealthy behavior pattern and raise awareness of the importance of getting patients help as soon as possible. Currently, a large number of organizations and advocacy groups and professionals assist people who exhibit signs of self-harm behavior.
