The following are the myths vs facts that one should keep in mind when diagnosed with atopic dermatitis –

1. Myth: Atopic dermatitis is contagious.

fact: Contrary to popular belief, atopic dermatitis (AD) is a genetic condition and is not contagious. The condition is not transmitted through contact with someone with AD. It is caused by an overactive immune system that disrupts the skin barrier, causing itchiness and dryness. Environmental factors may then trigger or worsen symptoms. It is important to understand that AD is not contagious, and one cannot “catch” it from another person.

2. Myth: Children grow out of AD.

fact: While it is true that some children may see their symptoms improve as they age, not all cases of AD resolve by adulthood. It is essential to prioritize skin care and adopt preventive measures to reduce flare-ups. It is important to seek medical advice for persistent symptoms, as healthy skin care habits play an important role in effectively managing AD.

3. Myth: Everyone has the same triggers for AD.

fact: There is a misconception that the triggers for AD are universal. However, the cause of flare-ups can vary greatly from person to person, influenced by factors such as individual skin sensitivity and stress levels. It is essential to seek professional diagnosis and personalized treatment plans to effectively identify and address specific triggers.

4. Myth: AD is just a skin problem.

fact: AD is more than just a skin problem – it affects your overall health. It can disrupt daily life, making it hard to focus on work, school, or even enjoy time with friends and family. Constant itching and discomfort can lead to stress, anxiety, and even depression. Research shows that people with AD are more likely to experience other health problems, such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. It is important to take AD seriously and understand that it has a profound impact on both physical and mental health.

5. Myth: AD can be cured with home remedies.

fact: While home remedies like coconut oil may provide temporary relief by moisturizing the skin and reducing itching, they do not cure AD. Like other chronic conditions, AD requires thorough medical evaluation and appropriate long-term treatment. Home remedies can complement prescribed treatments but they should not be relied upon as the sole solution to effectively manage AD. It is important to have regular checkups and follow your doctor’s advice to control the condition in the long run.
