In the world of investment, mistakes are made from everyone, but after learning from them, real wealth is formed. Investor Gajendra Kothari, who made a portfolio of 60 crores in 15 years, is a living example of this. In 2008, from losing 50 lakhs in FNO trading to watching miscelling in the mutual fund industry, their mistakes and learns show the way for common investors. Let us understand from their story what mistakes are made in investment, and how “boring work” can make you a millionaire.
Easy advice best!
During his initial job, Gajendra Kothari saw miscelling in the mutual fund industry. Misscelling means selling the policy by telling something. In 2004-2008, 6 percent spending on the new fund offer (NFO) was common and 2.25 percent distributor commission was common. People used to get confused in stock IPO and mutual funds IPO. Gajendra Kothari saw high net worth clients, who had old investment of crores, but did not know it. He says, “I learned that people need easy advice.” In 2009, SEBI banned the entry load, then the industry was considered as “finish”. But this was the time when Gajendra Kothari started Etica Wealth, so that the investors could give the right advice.
Stock market crash and patience
In 2010, Gajendra Kothari started a SIP of Rs 10,000. When the Covid crash came in 2020, it had been 10 years, but the return was just 7 percent. In the 10 years, the investment has usually increased significantly, but it was “hurting 7 percent.” Kothari says that he did not stop SIP. In 15 years, investment of 18 lakhs had increased to 86 lakhs. The 2008 Crash taught that the markets are cyclicals. They say that instability gives returns. Stop in fear, then lost.
“Boring work” victory
Gajendra Kothari’s biggest learning is automation. His SIP started from Rs 10,000 to Rs 41 lakh, as he automated it. He says, “Whether the market is 80,000 or 85,000, I did not mind. I would have missed if manual.” His 90 percent of wealth came from SIP, as he is “Sleepy Investor”. They do not do FD, PPF, Crypto, or Direct Stocks. His simple fund is, do boring work themselves and let the compounding work.
